WJ Communications Launches 4W 28V InGaP HBT (GaAs) Power Amplifier Modules for WCDMA Infrastructure Applications

SAN JOSE, Calif., Dec. 18, 2006 -- WJ Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ:WJCI), a leading designer and supplier of radio frequency (RF) products and solutions for the wireless infrastructure and radio frequency identification (RFID) reader markets, today announced its AP622, a 4W power amplifier module for WCDMA infrastructure systems. This new product builds upon the successful WJ Communications AP60x family of 28V InGaP/GaAs HBT power amplifiers. The AP622, a highly integrated 2-stage power amplifier, is ideal for the pre-driver and driver stages in WCDMA base stations and power amplifier modules, and the output stage in repeaters. It represents the next generation power amplifiers developed by WJ Communications to support the market needs for an integrated product that provides outstanding performance.

Product Overview

The AP622 is a two-stage power amplifier module operating from 2110 to 2170MHz and housed in a small, RoHS-compliant, 13 x 29 x 4.1mm flange mount package. Furthermore, the AP622 module has a P1dB of 35dBm, 28dB of power gain and ACLR of -55dBc at 23dBm power output for WCDMA applications and operates from a +28V supply at 130mA operating current when configured for class AB operation.

Value Proposition

Responding to market and customers' demands for a highly integrated power amplifier module, the AP622 reflects these inputs while lowering the overall total cost of ownership and maintaining the superior performance of the AP60x family at the same time. By leveraging WJ's expertise with the AP500 series combined with the market leading AP60x products, the AP622 module embodies the requirements for high linearity, high power gain, low operating current, 28V supply voltage, and design flexibility encapsulated in a single package. The AP622 module incorporates the same features as the AP60x products including the active bias circuitry to achieve improved linearity performance and adjustable quiescent bias, meanwhile, provide design flexibility for demanding system requirements. A unique feature of the AP622 power amplifier module is the fully matched 50 Ohm input and outputs to simplify the design and PCB layout for wireless infrastructure equipment designs. More importantly, it enables designers to "plug and play" the module into their system designs thus reducing the implement time and resources.

The following are AP622 power amplifier module key features:

• High Linearity
  - Provides excellent linearity which rapidly improves below -50dBc as power is backed-off

• Integrated Active Bias Circuitry
  - Compensates for variations in linearity and current draw over temperature
  - Competing LDMOS solutions require external bias circuitry which increases costs and PCB space

• Adjustable Quiescent Bias
  - Enables designer to adjust quiescent bias pin on AP62x products to configure for better linearity, higher efficiency or a combination of the two

• High Voltage Supply
  - Useable over 24V to 32V supply range
  - Operates off the same voltage supply as final stage power amplifier
  - Reduces component count - no switching regulators and supporting components are needed thus reducing costs and PCB space

• Simplifies PCB Layout
  - Fully matched 50W input and output - simplifies design and PCB layout
  - Enables "plug and play" into new designs - reduces resources and time to implement solution
